The quiet, organized home office

Acoustic panels and file cabinets, chosen on the numbers

Spec-checked picks for the two problems a home office actually has: it sounds wrong on calls, and there is paper everywhere. We read the documentation, do the arithmetic on the page, and tell you which products publish a measurement and which publish a sentence.

Our position

Everyone in this category says they tested twenty sets of panels

We have not tested any, and we say so. We own none of these products, we have no meter and no test room, and no amount of confident writing would change that.

What we did instead: read every manufacturer's published documentation across six categories, compile what is actually in it, and do the arithmetic on the page so you can check it. That turned up something more useful than a test would have - most of this market publishes a marketing sentence where the measurement should be. Three acoustic panels out of eleven publish an NRC. One file cabinet out of twenty-one publishes a drawer interior. Not one office pod publishes a figure from the standard written for office pods.

So every number on this site is either a manufacturer's published figure, named as theirs, or our arithmetic from it, shown line by line. Where a figure does not exist, we say that too, and we mark the product down for it. Read the full method.

What won each shortlist

The top pick from each of our shortlists, with its live price. Every one of these was chosen on published specifications, and every one carries an explicit reason to skip it on its own page.

How to soundproof a home office

Fourteen fixes, ordered by what each achieves per dollar, ending in what we would actually buy. The first one costs seven dollars.

Fourteen fixes, ordered by what each achieves per dollar, with the arithmetic for the ones where arithmetic is possible. It ends in things you can buy, which the page currently ranking first for this question does not.

How this is funded

We earn a commission, and it never changes a ranking

Felt & File is an Amazon Associate. When you buy through a link here we earn a commission at no extra cost to you. That is the entire business model and we would rather state it plainly than bury it.

What it does not do is move a ranking. Every pick on this site is ordered on published specifications and our own arithmetic, every one carries an explicit reason to skip it, and several of the products we rank highest are the cheapest things in their category. Where a product has no live price, the button says Check price on Amazon rather than showing a number we cannot stand behind.
